Dual Quality for over 74 Years

In the Beginning

What started out in 1936 as Hayhurst Farm brittanys located in Idaho  has since become one of the most historic lines of top dual brittanys in the country. With several transitions from Hayhurst to Lewis's and now the entire families tradition rests in the hand of third generation Powder River Kennels. It is with great pride we have withstood the test of time. Evolving within the breed and helping to make it what it is today.

In a breed where there are currently 559 dual champions. We are proud to have been here from the beginning. Our first home bred Dual Champion is Lewis's Ringo he was #60 on the dual brittany list and finished his Field championship in 1959 in grand style being one of the youngest dogs at 13 months old to do such.At the age of 8 he finished his show championship in 1966. Up until Ringo the family had bred pure hunting dogs and it was through him they realized the true purpose of a a dual dog.

As the obsession grew to produce the next dual for the family so did the pedigree in which it would come from. Consistantly from 1964 through 1976 the family raised trained and trialed some of the top field dogs of the time. During this time period it was also a true test of strength given Bill Lewis had gotten cancer of the voice box and had it removed. Through the power of the whistle commands he was able to train and compete with the dogs. Having learned to litterally keep his mouth shut while training he influenced many top trainers who were around him including Dave Walker. It was a good thing he was in control of the whistle fast because In 1974 the next star was born DC Wingville's Powder River Pete. He was started in the field and at 4 was showing a huge promise for the show ring. Pete came on the scene like ganbusters garnering multiple Best In Shows and Breed wins. He finished his show championship in 1979 followed by his field championship in 1980. He has produced some of the top brittany lines you see today. He is number 205 on the dual brittany list
